The Stranger Foundation began with a simple observation by its founder, Lori Stranger. Good food was being thrown away at the end of the day, while people a few streets away were going without.
Watching fresh sandwiches and other unsold food being discarded, Lori couldn't help but wonder how many people could have benefitted from it. It seemed such an unnecessary waste, particularly when so many people were struggling without access to something as basic as a meal.
That simple question sparked an idea. What if the food being thrown away could instead be given to people who needed it most?
From that moment, the idea behind The Stranger Foundation began to take shape. We believe that something as fundamental as good food should never be taken for granted.
Today, the foundation works with café, bakeries and supermarkets to collect their surplus food and distribute it to people experiencing homelessness. By redirecting food that would otherwise go to waste, we aim to make a meaningful difference to people's lives, one meal at a time.
By bringing together the food that is available with the people and communities who need it, we want to make a practical difference while helping to create a more thoughtful and sustainable approach to food.
At the heart of The Stranger Foundation we believe that good food should not go to waste when someone could benefit from it.
We are based in Central London. Our work runs on donated food and volunteers' time.
